Toronto Police Officer Facing Murder Charge, Victim’s Family ‘Relieved’

Toronto Police Officer Const. James Forcillo is facing a second-degree murder after shooting the 18-year-old Sammy Yatim on a streetcar. Forcillo had been suspended from duty during the investigation. According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the actions of Forcillo justify a second-degree murder.

Yatim was on a streetcar stopped when he was shot dead in July 27. Witnesses said Yatim was holding a knife inside an emptry streetcar.

The family of Sammy Yatim felt “relieved to find out that the SIU recommended charging the police officer.
